Progressive Democrats of America has endorsed Democratic candidate Donna Edwards in Maryland’s 4th district congressional race. Edwards, an attorney and advocate for non-profit groups, is running to “return the voices of ordinary people back to the Democratic Party.”

PDA Executive Director Tim Carpenter believes the Edwards candidacy sends a message to Democratic Party leaders. “Any Democrat who continues to support this illegal and immoral war must be held accountable,” he says. “If Democrats want to lead this country again, Democrats need to take the lead on getting our troops out of Iraq.”

”My opponent, Albert Wynn, voted to give President Bush the unilateral authority to invade Iraq without asking any of the really important questions,” said Donna Edwards. “Now, more than ever, we need a representative who will stand up for the Democratic ideals and priorities of this district, and not simply fall in step with President Bush and the Republicans. PDA has been working hard to hold legislators accountable and I am proud to have their endorsement.”

Edwards is currently on non-paid leave as executive director at the Arca Foundation, where she has led campaigns to support a living wage, protect social security, support international labor and human rights, ensure an independent judiciary and end capital punishment.

Donna Edwards’ decision to run was a result of her opponent drifting away from Democratic principles. “Our current incumbent representative in Congress consistently votes against the interests of ordinary Americans, casting his lot with Bush and the Republicans on such critical issues as Iraq, the industry lobbyist-written energy bill, and the bankruptcy bill,” said Edwards. “The citizens of this district are facing real issues such as outrageous healthcare and gas prices, predatory lending, and finding affordable housing. I am in this race to win. I will work in the Congress to bring real change on issues that are priorities for constituents of Maryland’s 4th district and the country.”
