Washington, DC (July 25, 2006) – Women Building for the Future (The Future PAC), today announced its endorsement of Donna Edwards in her bid to unseat 7-term incumbent Albert Wynn in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District.
Founded in 2002, The Future PAC is the first national political action committee developed by African-American women to support progressive African-American women candidates at the federal, state, and local levels by creating a network of support and funding. The FuturePAC board includes Essence Magazine editor Susan Taylor, noted economist Dr. Julianne Malveaux, and Patricia A. Ford, international executive vice-president of the Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO, CLC.
“Over the last twenty years, Donna Edwards has demonstrated leadership through her involvement in community action and public policy. Donna is a woman leader for the 21st Century. She’ll bring a fresh voice for women, children, and families to the Congress. She will not settle for the status quo,†said Future PAC board member Dr. Julianne Malveaux in announcing the endorsement.
As founder and first executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Donna led in the fight to win landmark federal legislation, the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, that provides comprehensive funding to shelter and serve victims of domestic violence. She also worked with corporate leaders to develop a model public-private partnership to support battered women and their children. In 2000, Donna became Executive Director of the Arca Foundation in Washington, D.C., where she serves as one of a handful of African American CEOs in family philanthropy. She brought a fresh new voice to philanthropy, and quickly gained prominence as a strategist and supporter of innovative efforts to support “living wage†campaigns, ensure the independence of the federal judiciary, end capital punishment, protect social security, and support labor and human rights internationally.
“I will honor my commitment to improve the lives of the people of our district and our country. I will work to end the United States’ costly, unilateral and disastrous war in Iraq. I will work for quality, affordable, universal health care. I will fight for equal access, economic development and economic empowerment for the success of families in our communities,†Edwards said. “It is an honor to be endorsed by The Future PAC, an organization of courageous women who are looking toward our future.â€
