Donna Edwards Campaign Files with Federal Elections Commission

TEMPLE HILLS, MD. – July 13, 2006 – Donna Edwards announced today that her campaign for Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District will file their first report with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC). After quietly filing her candidacy in mid-April in her bid in the September 12th Democratic Primary to unseat incumbent Rep. Albert Wynn, Donna Edwards has been able to raise nearly $200,000 for the second quarter.

“We are prepared to take this challenge to real voters. It’s time for change,” said Edwards. “In a district with nearly 80 percent Democrats, there is no excuse for our member of Congress to travel in lock step with the Bush-Cheney administration on the critical issues of our time,” declared Edwards.

“My opponent has supported the Bush-Cheney administration one time too many – on giving President Bush a blank check for the failed war in Iraq that’s costing us lives and $2 billion a week; on joining with President Bush to give over $25 billion in tax breaks to oil companies while working people pay the price at the pump; on supporting repeal of the estate tax resulting in billions in cuts to vital programs for education and other pressing domestic needs; and on penalizing working people trying to recover from medical catastrophe through bankruptcy.”

“People in our district have had to settle for the status quo for far too long. That is no longer acceptable. It’s time to end the failed, “go-along, to-get-along” leadership of Albert Wynn – It’s time for change,” said Edwards

A lawyer and public interest advocate for over twenty years, Donna Edwards founded the National Network to End Domestic Violence and fought to pass the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. She has led on such issues as campaign finance reform, supporting “living wages” for working people, protecting Social Security, and advocating multilateral, diplomatic engagement in foreign policy.”

“This early momentum proves that my candidacy is for real and that people are ready for true leadership from a real Democrat,” added Edwards. “Unlike Albert Wynn who has received money from oil and gas, telecommunications, banking and other industry PACs, my fundraising has relied on individuals from our district and around the country who are ready for change.”
