Clarification of Statement Re. DC Commuter Tax

Donna Edwards, Democratic candidate for Congress (MD-4)

“On WTOP this past Friday, my comments in response to a question about a commuter tax for people who work in the nation’s capital may not have been as clearly understood as I would have liked. As your next Congressperson, I promise to be open and transparent with my legislative agenda. In keeping with this, please allow me to clarify:

“My position is clear: I do not support a DC commuter tax on residents of Maryland or Virginia. Over a hundred thousand of the constituents I will serve work in Washington, and they provide a critical economic boon to the city. They pay taxes to support the District every time they pay rent on an office, park their car, buy lunch, or see a movie or shop after work.

“We live in a thriving, interconnected metropolitan area, and for any jurisdiction to begin to unfairly tax the residents of another would set off a chain reaction that would be a recipe for economic disaster for all of us.

“As I said on Friday: as a member of Congress, it will be my duty to carefully consider every bill that comes across my desk. I will do that. But committing to read a bill is not the same as committing to support it.”
