Donna Edwards - "Working for Women"

Donna Edwards -Working for Women

A nationally regarded advocate for women and their families, Donna Edwards personally knows the struggles that women, particularly single mothers, face in this country. Inspired by her life experiences, Donna today laid out a broad ranging set of priorities today that she will champion in Congress to help make women's lives healthier, more manageable and more successful.

Forty-seven million Americans are uninsured today, including more than 17 million women.  Donna knows first-hand what it's like to wake up without health care coverage; to juggle paying for a well-child visit versus a day at daycare; to delay seeking preventive medical treatment only to find herself in the emergency room without sufficient health insurance - even with a full-time job.  In Congress, she will fight to make sure no family will have to make those difficult choices. In addition to fighting for overall access to quality affordable healthcare, Donna knows that women face unique health challenges and she will work to help women meet them by investing in prevention, education and research around key women's health issues including cancer, heart disease, obesity, and HIV/AIDS.   It is this type of leadership that is needed in Congress compared to the current representative.  For example, Cong. Wynn voted against legislation to ensure that states mandate requiring insurers to cover pregnancy, childbirth, child care, breast and cervical cancer screening were protected and that associated health plans could not choose to exclude such coverage. [HR 525, House Vote 425, 7/26/05]

In addition to healthcare, women's struggle to balance the demands of work and family in an ever worsening economic environment has been exacerbated by inequities in the system that stacks the deck against women, particularly single mothers. Donna, like so many women in the 4th Congressional district, has dealt with fighting to make a better life for her son and trying to make ends meet on a single income without child support. In Congress, she will work to help women just like her meet these demands by fighting for workplace equity, affordable child care, and making transportation and education more accessible and affordable.
Donna has worked tirelessly throughout her career to promote the rights and well-being of women and their families and she plans to continue that advocacy in Congress.

As a member of Congress, Donna will work for the women of her district and the nation by fighting to:

·    Remove Financial Barriers to Preventative Care and  Invest in Health Education
·    Invest in HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention in Maryland
·    Ensure Medical Research Addresses Disparities for Women of Color
·    Continue the Fight Against Domestic Violence
·    Expand Reproductive Healthcare Services and Protect a Woman's Right to Choose
·    Fight for Pay Equity and to Prevent Workplace Discrimination for Women
·    Expand Access to Affordable Child Care
·    Help Women Care for Family Members
·    Expand Public Transportation to Promote Work and Health
·    Promote Continuing Education
