Unions Cite Edwards’ Progressive Principles and Willingness to Fight for Working Families in MD-04
New Carrollton – Donna Edwards today received the endorsement of SEIU and UFCW Local 400, two of the largest, most active unions in the area, in her campaign to represent Maryland’s 4th CD in Congress.
“I am honored to receive this endorsement from SEIU and UFCW – two of the most vibrant leaders among organized labor,” said Edwards. “I am proud to stand on the side of nurses, janitors, small business owners, seniors, healthcare and childcare workers to fight for honorable wages, pensions and health benefits. I have dedicated a large portion of my career to improving the lives of workers and their families. When elected to Congress, I promise to fight for the rights of workers in my own district and throughout the country.”
“Donna Edwards has the progressive principles to best represent the Marylanders in the 4th District,” said Ebs Burnough, Political Director of 1199 SEIU. “She is a proven leader, supporting living wage campaigns, preventing domestic violence and promoting innovative programs that make a difference in the lives of working families.”
“In his 16 years in office, Al Wynn has put interests of big business and his corporate contributors ahead of those of his constituents,” said Terry Cavanagh, Executive Director of the SEIU Maryland State Council. “We need progressive leaders like Donna Edwards to make change in the 4th District and in the U.S. Congress.”
These endorsements mark a pivotal point in this campaign as they help build momentum heading into the final stretch and bring significant financial and human resources to the campaign An endorsement from SEIU and UFCW represents more than a seal of approval for a candidate; during the 2006 Union-endorsed campaigns of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, among others, 1199 SEIU members knocked on over 100,000 doors while placing radio and television ads in support of the candidates.
