Over the course of the 112th and 113th Congresses, with Republicans in the majority in the House, we’ve seen a relentless attack on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. I know the fight to protect Social Security for seniors and future generations is of the utmost importance for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District, which currently has over 77,000 recipients. That is why I led the fight to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid during the debt ceiling crisis negotiations by authoring a letter to President Obama with 69 other Members of Congress urging no benefit reductions. I later led 57 House Democrats in a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate voicing our strong opposition to the adoption of the Chained CPI, which would have resulted in a reduction in benefits for millions of seniors, women, and veterans. As we move through the budgetary process in the months ahead, I will continue the fight to protect these vital programs that serve as a lifeline for millions of Americans.
